Factors influencing the healthcare service utilization of Ethiopian immigrants.

This study describes the healthcare service utilization behavior of Ethiopian immigrants in the United States. Representatives of the population were recruited and a survey questionnaire about the predisposing factors, enabling factors, and need factors relating to healthcare use was administered. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression and results showed that the predisposing factors of being older, female, having insurance, having a current medical diagnosis, or being on medication were predictive of healthcare utilization. This study can provide information to healthcare administrators, community leaders and social workers about the need to encourage this population to visit healthcare providers for both preventative and intervention services. It particularly highlights the need for community outreach efforts targeting young Ethiopian men. The study suggests that once immigrants make contact with health professionals, they may be more willing to seek continued care.
