Russian Male Norms: Associations with Risk Taking, Help Seeking and Stress Attributes.

Research suggests that Russian males have low life satisfaction, increased psychological and medical ailments, and a 13-year reduced life expectancy gap compared to females. Research regarding Western masculinity norms indicates that traditional masculinity endorsement is associated with increased risk-taking activities, reduced life satisfaction, psychological and medical difficulties, and negative attitudes toward help seeking behaviors. The academic community appears to be limited in male studies and a clear need exists to help identify potential mental and physical health problems that can reduce overall life expectancy. To help increase advancement in the field of male studies, specifically cross-cultural research with Russian males, the present study examined the strength of associations between Russian traditional male role norms and health related behaviors, such as help seeking, risk taking, stress susceptibility, and life satisfaction. The current findings suggest that increased Russian traditional male role norms are associated with reduced life satisfaction, help seeking behaviors and increased risk-taking behaviors.
