The challenges faced by homeless African American fathers in securing safe, decent, and affordable housing for their children: Second chance, not second class.

Homeless inner-city African American fathers who provide care for their children are in need of housing, but many of these fathers have challenges that minimize their ability to obtain decent, safe, and affordable housing for their children. The aims of this study were to 1) create significant qualitative data on the challenges these fathers face, 2) increase awareness of their challenges, and 3) educate on those challenges by introducing the gender role conflict theory (GRC). A qualitative multiple-case study design was used to reach a comprehensive understanding of their challenges and barriers. The findings suggest that homeless inner-city African American fathers who provide care for their children and are seeking adequate housing face trails and obstacles related to their 1) homeless experience 2) caregiving while homeless experience, 3) challenges and barriers, 4) perceptions, and 5) understanding the need.
