Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of structure and functions of neurons. 4-chloro-N-(naphthalen-1-ylmethyl)-5-(3-(piperazin-1-yl) phenoxy) thiophene-2-sulfonamide (B355252) is an aryl thiophene compound that was identified from the BRITE library collection as an enhancer of neurite outgrowth in NS-1 cells in the presence of sub-physiological amount of NGF and recently showed the neuroprotective effects and signaling pathways in a stroke model of glutamate. Different neurotoxin models have been used to study PD. The MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine) model shows similarity with PD symptoms and is widely used to study this disease. In this research neuronal cell lines were exposed to the neuronal toxin, MPP+ (1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium), a derivative of MPTP, in vitro and the protective effects of the Compound B355252 were investigated. The basis of this research was to determine if MPP+ induced cell death in neuronal cells can be prevented by the neuroprotective agent B355252.
