Many written works about Ana Caro's play Valor, agravio y mujer speak to the masculinization of the protagonist, Leonor. A masculinized woman during the time of comedias in 17th-century Spain was referred to as a mujer varonil, who was often seen as a protagonist in Spanish comedias, creating a special appeal to female audience members in the corrales, or public play houses. The idea of a mujer varonil was adventurous and exciting because she did things that real women didn't or couldn't do in the patriarchal society of the time, like travel alone. This essay will expand upon the theme of the mujer varonil, as well as inverting it, by exploring the feminization of the male characters in Valor, agravio y mujer. As Leonor assumes the role of the primary masculine presence in the play, the male characters fill the more feminine roles.
