The lived experience of women who have had a child through egg donation: A phenomenological study.

This qualitative research study explored the research question: "What is the lived experience of having a child through egg donation?" Moustakas' transcendental phenomenological model was used to study the thoughts and feelings of 9 participants. The data were collected through open ended interviews, recorded and transcribed. Multiple dominant themes emerged from the analysis, including emotions, support, pregnancy/birth experiences and aftermath. Data analysis showed that donor egg IVF can be considered an emotional rollercoaster and participants wanted and needed a support system in place to navigate through this journey. Furthermore, it was discovered that using donor eggs had a far-reaching impact and long-lasting effect on the lives of the participants. Study results were discussed in regards to the implications for counselors, doctors and medical staff involved with care of IVF patients and donor egg IVF in particular.
