Interprofessional Education in Undergraduate Nursing

The Institute of Medicine aspires to ensure all patients enter a healthcare system built upon patient safety through the employment of interprofessional collaboration. The necessary ingredients to improve interprofessional team performance include team training founded upon communication techniques and instruction methods leveraged to enhance learning outcomes. This project acknowledges the need to develop interprofessional education among undergraduate nursing students aimed to knowledge and perceptions of collaborative practice. Twenty-seven senior level undergraduate nursing students were provided with asynchronous interprofessional education prior to simulation activities. Following the education deployment, half the nursing class was provided with an interprofessional education simulation. The remaining students were provided with standard simulation education. Observations were conducted during all simulation experiences to evaluate participant's teamwork and communication skills. Prior to and following the interprofessional education students completed knowledge and perception surveys related to interprofessional collaboration. Outcomes demonstrated interprofessional education improves student's knowledge and perceptions.;Keywords: interprofessional education, healthcare, nursing, undergraduate.
