Transformation and spatial reconfiguration of downtown Bernie, Missouri.

Older residents of Bernie, Missouri recall a vibrant and active downtown that featured a variety of businesses to service to local community. Today, this commercial district features only a limited number and variety of services, many of which do not cater to a large proportion of the community's population. Many business buildings simply stand unutilized and in a state of deterioration. Since the early 1970s, Bernie experienced an economic decline in its central business district (CBD). Therefore, the primary objective of this research is to trace the cause and effect of this decline, a typical problem associated with many small American towns. The rerouting of State Highway 25 in 1968-1969 served as the source of Bernie's decline. Acting as a case study, this research illustrates the economic effect of transportation improvements that reroute roadways away from the CBD of a small town. In the case of Bernie, a spatial reconfiguration of the business district occurred as downtown became a less viable location and areas along the rerouted highway could facilitate the trade associated with a more mobile population.
