Mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law: Feminist biblical narrative preaching on the book of Ruth.

We need to maintain good relationships with our relatives in order to practice the Golden Law, love your neighbor as yourself. It is the relationship between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law that causes most relational conflicts. I chose the book of Ruth to research a biblical study about the conflict and tried to reinterpret the book of Ruth from perspectives of feminism and narrative criticism considering Korean audiences. I shed new light on the relationship between Ruth and her mother-in-law(Naomi) based on the types of relational conflicts between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law which are discussed in the existing studies on the conflicts, namely conflict for power, conflict for role, conflict for affection, and conflict for life. Through this research, I understood how Ruth and Naomi were able to maintain a harmonious relationship.;Seen from the perspective of conflict for power, they gave up their own power because of their faith through which they relied on God. They showed their determined will through their faith which went beyond their own time and custom. From a role-forstructure perspective, even though they showed traditional role distribution based on their own custom, they offset their conflict through their responsible attitudes when Naomi helped Ruth to remarry Boaz and Ruth supported Naomi. From the conflict-for-affection aspect, I found that they opened a chapter of reconciliation instead of conflict when they respected and considered each other and, from the conflict-for-life aspect, they had a non-egocentric conversation.;I propose biblical narrative preaching which is proper to the reinterpretation of the relationship between the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law in the book of Ruth. I researched narrative preaching with a premise that the two main preaching styles of the Korean pulpit, three-point topical preaching and expository preaching, are more authoritative and oppressive. However, I propose biblical narrative preaching because I find a danger in narrative sermons that seem to be non-biblical due to their free structure. The biblical narrative preaching is more based on the bible and includes short and clear explanation about narratives used in the sermons, and biblical narratives are preferable in the biblical narrative preaching. Above all, I propose that preachers deliver one conclusion through a closed conclusion instead of open conclusion which is usually used in narrative preaching.
