Experts predict 76 million will retire by 2030 resulting in shortages at all levels of management and loss of knowledge across industries. Ready and Conger suggest signs of the upcoming shortages are apparent with an existing lack of talent already affecting the ability of businesses to accept new work, resulting in millions of dollars of lost revenues. Analysis indicated fragmented literature with researchers focusing on new, often overlapping, theories that have not been tested or replicated. This quantitative study developed a new construct to measure the anticipated workforce shortage and replicated Baruch and Peiperl's study of a career system typology proposed by Sonnenfeld and Peiperl's. The sample size limited the findings and indicated the need for future research. However, preliminary indications were that few organizations use knowledge management systems and may be unprepared for the projected workforce shortage
