In between and on the way: A glimpse into serving in Laramie, Wyoming.

摘要

This thesis explores present-day cultural stigmas and stereotypes surrounding the occupation of serving. By weaving together personal experience, interviews with local Laramie waitresses and waiters, and secondary literature, I outline how these stereotypes came to exist, but I elaborate more fully on how these stereotypes manifest in a particular community of servers. Laramie affords me numerous servers to interview, and by doing so I gain insight into this community of people. I hypothesize that my collection of occupational narratives will relate to issues discussed in the larger body of scholarly literature, yet I am interested in how these interviews will offer a new understanding of the stereotypes and unsustainable work practices faced by real-life people.
