This dissertation is a critical edition of a section of the Mir'at al-Zaman by Sibt ibn al-Jauzi. It is based primarily on a manuscript found in the Landberg Collection of the Yale University Library and secondarily on a manuscript of the mukhtasar (or epitome) of the Mir'at al-Zaman found in the British Museum.;The Mir'at al-Zaman is a universal history written by a preacher in the great mosque of Damascus. This edition covers the years 1157-1168 and 1182-1186. The chronicler was mainly interested in the struggle against the Crusaders, the struggles between the rulers of the various Muslim states and the lives of the great men of the religious and intellectual world. The chronicle is therefore given over to these matters; battles and political events are recorded under the years in which they occurred; the lives of scholars and holy men are recounted under the years in which they died.;This edition is provided with an introduction, a table of contents which summarizes the main events of each section of the chronicle, and an index. The footnotes are both textual and historical in nature.
