This study examines Gee's Bend quilts, their patterns and styles from the years of isolation to the present day. A metamorphosis in the quilts occurred once national exposure came to the community of Gee's Bend in the mid 1960s and continues. Three generations of the Mary Lee Bendolph family's quilting styles warrant discussing these aspects: (1) there are the prevalent patterns and materials used by each quilter; (2) the Depression era inspired 'make do' quilts versus those produced after the Freedom Quilting Bee, the effects each time period had on the creative process; and (3) how did the faith of this family and its belief in God command their creativity.
