A description of the steps taken in the writing and illustrating of a children's picture book.

The problem. The purpose of this study was to describe the steps taken in writing and illustrating a picture book for children on the five to eight year old level.;Procedure. In order to write and illustrate a picture book for children it was first necessary to determine what constituted a good picture book for this age range. This was done in the following way. (1) The writer made a survey of related literature and an analysis of the available research on the subject, to determine what opinions the authorities in the field held on this subject. This was explored from the standpoint of text, illustration, format, and children's interest. It included the opinions and findings of librarians, editors, writers, and educators working with young children. (2) An attempt was made to find out what publishers want in a picture book for this age range. (3) The writer explored the various problems to be encountered in the writing and illustrating of the book and ways in which these problems could be resolved. (4) With this information as a guide, the writer proceeded to write the text and prepare the illustrations. This required much trial and error. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
