Identifying and overcoming barriers domestic violence victims face: A victim advocate perspective.

Research shows that up to 5 million women, and maybe more, are impacted by violence which is perpetrated by their intimate partner each year in the United States. Reports of rape and sexual assault are estimated at 1.5 million women, and this number may be more as well. When considering these numbers, research also substantiates victims who received assistance from a domestic violence victim advocate had less fear; were better able to leave abusive relationships; and access services. Research has also repeatedly stated the overall detriment to women's health. Therefore, it is important to examine victim advocate perspectives on the barriers they face in assisting victims access services. To better understand barriers domestic violence victims may face through a victim advocate perspective, a qualitative phenomenological inquiry is conducted in this study with victim advocates working in domestic violence centers across the state of Florida. This examination is facilitated through a critical feminist lens. By identifying barriers through the professionals who assist victim's access services in the social service and criminal justice systems, it is intended that advocates can develop an agenda for change to overcome barriers.
