Exploration of the Third: Ego-Self Relationship as the Carrier of Consciousness.

Within the context of Carl Gustav Jung's complex theory of individuation, this study explores the relationship between the ego and the Self and demystifies the role of the ego in the development of Self. An alchemical hermeneutic methodology is applied to a depth psychological process of reflection and connection to the ego-Self relationship as the carrier of consciousness. It is argued that tension in the relationship between the ego and the Self cultivates consciousness. Heuristic methodology is utilized to explore the author's inner life through dialogues between the ego and Self as an example of the clinical benefits of conscious work with unconscious elements of psyche. Broader clinical applications in psychotherapeutic work are explored.
