REVOLUTION AND FOREIGN RELATIONS IN THE THOUGHT OF MAO ZEDONG.

This is a study of the relationship between the problem of China's revolutionary social and economic development and the problem of foreign relations in the thought of Mao Zedong. The central argument of this study is that Mao Zedong's approach to the problem of China's foreign relations can best be understood within the larger context of Mao's understanding of the revolutionary process in China.; This study begins with an analysis of the problem of China's foreign relations as a theoretical problem in the Chinese revolution. Focusing closely on Mao's writings of the late 1930's, this study demonstrates that Mao's theoretical break with Stalinism provided him with the conceptual tools with which he would analyze both China's social terrain and the international arena. These theoretical tools included new understanding of the problem of praxis, of the nature of contradictions and the stages of the revolutionary process.; During the 1940's when Mao was most active in setting foreign policy for the Chinese Communist Movement, these tools were applied to the problem of relations with both the United States and the Soviet Union. During this period the definition of the New Democratic Stage of the revolution formed the parameters in which contradictions in the international arena were analyzed and foreign policy courses set.; Finally, this study surveys the broad array of Mao's post-1949 writings and speeches and places Mao's diverse writings on foreign policy problems within the problematik defined by his evolving understanding of the problems of socialist construction.
