CONSTRUCTION OF A CURRICULUM MODEL AND ITS APPLICATION FOR ANALYZING THE KOREAN MIDDLE SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS FOR TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION

This study has two purposes. One is to construct a curriculum model that can be used as criteria for developing or evaluating a curriculum and/or textbooks of technology education. The other is to apply this model for analyzing the Korean middle school textbooks of technology education.;Through theoretical review, this study has confirmed the fact that educators understand and emphasize education from intrinsic and extrinsic viewpoints. Applying the intrinsic and extrinsic viewpoints to technology education, this study has identified three intrinsic curriculum principles which are implied in the concept of technology education. These principles are concerned with the contexts, components, and complexity of technology for education. This study has also identified four extrinsic curriculum principles which are implied by the extrinsic viewpoints of technology education. These principles are concerned with occupational, consumer, recreational, and social aspects of the subject matter. Based upon these intrinsic and extrinsic curriculum principles, this study has constructed a curriculum model which reflects the current viewpoints of technology education more validly and comprehensively.;Applying the curriculum model, this study analyzed the extent to which the intrinsic and extrinsic curriculum principles are reflected in the Korean middle school textbooks for technology education. A coding matrix and analysis schemes developed by the researcher were applied to analyze the content of the textbooks.;Through the analysis of the textbooks, this study found that the intrinsic and extrinsic curriculum principles are not reflected well in the content. From the facts found by the analysis, this study has concluded that the textbooks are more appropriate for training technical skills rather than for general education to understand the nature of technological systems in modern industrial societies.;The curriculum model developed in this study is strongly recommended as providing the criteria for developing or evaluating a curriculum and/or textbooks in technology education. It was also recommended that the Korean middle school textbooks should be revised in order to reflect the current viewpoints of technology education more validly and comprehensively.
