摘要

The dissertation attempts to argue for the relevance of existential ontological and epistemological themes for the social sciences and for political science in particular. The focus of these themes is upon the nature of human experience. The position taken in the dissertation is that human existence may be conceived as having both formal and substantive dimensions and that the formal dimension has been given inadequate attention by non-existential understandings of the nature of human experience.;The dissertation draws out the implications of the model's logic for theorization in the social sciences and is also meaningful in regard to the issue of the self-understanding of those who practice social science.;Themes from existentialist philosophy and its associated methodology, phenomenology, are incorporated into a 'model of existence' in which the formal aspect of human experience is the primary unit of analysis. The categories of the model form a philosophical conceptual framework that presents a new and different way of understanding human experience emphasizing subjectivity.
