MICHAEL HAYDN'S MASSES AND REQUIEM MASS COMPOSITIONS (MOZART, SALZBURG, AUSTRIA).

The rediscovery of Michael Haydn began about thirty years ago with the publication of Jancik's book entitled Michael Haydn, ein vergessener Meister. After 1973, however, published music and research about the younger Haydn once again became negligible in the United States, although a complete thematic catalog is currently in preparation by Charles H. Sherman and T. Donley Thomas.;In Chapter Two, an overview of Haydn's Masses discusses only those works which are available in published editions, with the exception of two unpublished Requiem settings. Musical examples are provided to illustrate aspects of Haydn's compositional style. Chapter Three contains a detailed analysis of Haydn's Requiem in C Minor (1771), the Missa pro defuncto Archiepiscopo Sigismundo.;Perhaps the most noteworthy contribution of this thesis is the comparison of Haydn's Requiem in C Minor (1771) and the Requiem by Mozart. In the voluminous literature which deals with Mozart's Requiem, there is only an occasional reference to Haydn's Requiem as a structural model for that work. These references are identified in chapters two and four of this study, and given a detailed analysis in the final chapter. Extensive musical examples are provided with the hope that the numerous similarities between the two works will be clearly evident. Michael Haydn's Requiem should be more widely known and recognized for the significant place it holds as a structural model and source of inspiration for Mozart's Requiem.;Chapter One of this study attempts to bring together all of the biographical information on Michael Haydn which is available in English. Neither Jancik's biography nor the "official" biography of the composer, Biographische Skizze von Michael Haydn, is available in English translation. The information which I compiled is a documentary biography derived from dictionary articles, doctoral dissertations, and primary source material which had been translated elsewhere. Haydn's relationship to Wolfgang Mozart is of particular interest as it relates to the comparison of their Requiem compositions in Chapter Four.
