Dichoptic and monoptic color matches have been compared in several studies. In this thesis, dichoptic and monoptic hue cancellation functions, which have never before been determined, were obtained over most of the visible spectrum using 30' continuously visible test fields at lcd/m('2).; The general trends in results were that, relative to monoptic cancellations, dichoptic cancellations required, (i) less green to cancel red in wavelengths above 600 nm, (ii) more red to cancel green in 540-560 nm lights, (iii) less red to cancel green in 510 and 520 test lights, and (iv) less yellow to cancel blue in 480-510 nm test lights. An especially pronounced result was that, with dichoptic presentation, all three subjects required more blue to cancel yellow in 560-610 nm test lights.; The data were approximately predicted by a model in which monoptic cancellations are based at the receptor level, whereas dichoptic cancellations are based upon cancellations of post-receptor opponent hue responses at a central level in the visual system. The model can also be extended to make reasonable predictions for data from Thomas, et al. and deWeert and Levelt's dichoptic color matching experiments.
