摘要

This is an historical case-study of the sources and results of anti-Communist activity at Rutgers University in the years 1950 to 1965, when specific events occurred there which served to strengthen a climate of intolerance for those at the University ostensibly associated with "Communistic" thought and activity.;The above events are analyzed in terms of the influential political forces and personalities within and outside the University who viewed the act of invoking the Fifth Amendment at such Committee hearings as in itself grounds for the dismissal of faculty members. The University administration under Dr. Lewis Webster Jones came to share that view; and supporting evidence is presented as to how the University in effect established a nationally-publicized and precedent-setting policy which turned this exercise of a Constitutional privilege into an academic offense.;Finally, evidence is presented that in spite of notable opposition existing both nationally and locally to the consequences of the anti-Communist drive at Rutgers University, the ideology and practices of anti-Communism came to dominate the socio-political life of the University in the 1950s. Moreover, the study shows that there existed a variety of external and internal political and social factors which cultivated and reinforced this circumstance; of which the most significant outcomes were the precedent-setting firings of Professors Heimlich and Finley and the forced dismissal of Professor Glasser.;The study explores the firings on December 31, 1952 from the University of a non-tenured Assistant Professor of History named Moses Finley and a tenured Associate Professor of Physics and Mathematics named Simon Heimlich, both of whom invoked the Fifth Amendment (the former, also invoking the First Amendment) in hearings of the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee on March 28, 1952 and September 24, 1952, respectively. Also explored is the forced resignation some nine months later from the Rutgers faculty of an Associate Professor of Law named Abraham Glasser due to his invocation of the Fifth Amendment before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in March 1953.
