The evolution of computer aided drafting, design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in engineering, construction and manufacturing industries (1952 to 1987).

The objective of this study was to describe the evolution of computer aided drafting, design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in engineering, construction and manufacturing industries, between the years 1952 and 1987.;It is strongly recommended that industry spend additional efforts, time and money towards research and development of a standard integrated CAD/CAM system for which the database could be used for both CAD and CAM operations in order for the United States to remain competitive in the world market.;It is further recommended that a similar follow-up study be made in the future, as well as recommendations for CAD/CAM curriculum development.;Conclusions were made that CAD started in the early 1950s. When the first generation CAD users realized the great benefits and capabilities of CAD systems, word spread into the industry and many companies today have greatly accepted the use of CAD systems. CAD/CAM systems started in the early 1980s continue to need more research efforts toward integrating CAD and CAM together.
