The agroforestry option in Canada with an emphasis on eastern Ontario

The objective of this thesis is to determine whether agroforestry has a potential for implementation in Canada. The study defines and describes agroforestry systems and outlines how they are being used to solve the environmental problems in developing countries. The forestry and agricultural sectors in Canada are examined and found to be developing resource degradation problems similar to the Third World. It is then proposed that agroforestry systems could similarly be used to help mitigate the problems facing these two resource sectors. Existing agroforestry applications and research in Canada, or those suitable to the Canadian environment are identified, described and their potential contribution is examined.;Eastern Ontario is selected as a case study to allow the implementation of agroforestry systems to be evaluated at a level where the analysis can provide detailed and applied results. The physical parameters of climate and terrain and soil, and socio-economic parameters of land, labour capital and management are examined and determined to be amenable to the implementation of agroforestry.
