摘要

The topic of this study is the use of Art in Psychotherapy. The focus of the study is a specific technique of Art Therapy designed from the Mandala traditions of Tibet and from the Sandpaintings of the American Indians. A brief historical review of these traditions introduces the topic in the first chapter.; The development of this technique, its use of mirrors for showing the extended view of the Mandala, and the initial work with groups is presented in a short personal review. Then its place in the Methodologies of Psychology is given, showing its historical linkage with Experimental, Anecdotal-Analytical, Client-Centered, and Transpersonal Psychology. Its interdisciplinary roots in Anthropology, Art History and Mystical Theology are also shown.; The use of this technique of Mandala-making in Art Psychotherapy is studied in the subsequent chapters. Narrative studies are presented to show the practical and graphic function of the technique with clients presenting certain therapeutic issues. Color plates are presented with these narrative studies to show aspects of the effectiveness of using mirrors in this method. A series of twenty-three Mandalas done by a client shows the serial element of transformation over a three month period.; A reflective section follows to show the current state of the literature on the subject of the unconscious in Psychotherapy. Authors from many disciplines are presented giving their viewpoint on issues related to the Mandala and its use in therapy. Their expertise ranges from Art Psychotherapy to Fine Arts, to Transpersonal Psychology.; The final Section presents a proposal for a training manual using the technique as a basis for counseling. Twelve principles form the nucleus of this training program. It gives directives for the use of the client-centered approach and guidelines for interpretation of the Mandalas. A final chapter draws conclusions about the future use of this technique for individual work as well as for groups and families. A research and development company has already been established to pursue these goals. A glossary of terms is added to give needed clarification on key concepts. A Conclusion and Appendix provide insight into the value of the present study as a statement of a model to be explored by both clinical and growth-oriented research.
