There are two types of homologous recombination in eukaryotes: reciprocal exchange (crossing-over) and nonreciprocal exchange (gene conversion). In the fungi, studies of meiotic recombination between single-copy genes located on homologous chromosomes have shown that gene conversion events are associated with crossing-over in flanking regions approximately 50% of the time. Gene conversion has also been shown to occur frequently between repeated genes located on the same chromosome, on homologous chromosomes and on non-homologous chromosomes. However, conversion between repeated genes is rarely associated with reciprocal exchange.
