he purpose of this research was to study the natural, built and behavioral factors predictive of energy consumption for residential space heating with wood or conventional fuels. This study was a secondary analysis of survey data from a nationwide representative sample of 5,682 households collected by the Department of Energy in the 1984-1985 Residential Energy Consumption Survey. Included were: weather, census division and utility data, interviewer-supplied dwelling measurements and respondent reported energy related dwelling characteristics, energy related family behaviors, composition and dwelling characteristics. Linear regression procedures were used to develop a model that identified key determinants accounting for the variability in wood consumption among wood burning families. A nonlinear regression model was employed to estimate the amount of conventional fuels that were used for space heating.
