Factors affecting hydrologic parameters used in modeling fishpond water requirements.

Hydrologic budgets were constructed for estimating quantities of water required for fishponds. Components of the hydrologic equation (seepage, evaporation, precipitation, runoff, overflow, and change in storage volume) were examined and adapted for fishponds. Field studies were conducted in 1985 to 1987.;Three water budget methods were used to estimate seepage from 12, 0.02 to 0.07-ha levee ponds. The pan method (where Class A pan evaporation is used to estimate pond evaporation) gave the most consistent results. An empirical equation (Lake Hefner) and a regression of stage change against a mass-transfer equation gave higher and more variable seepage values. Seepage from 12 ponds, as estimated by the average of 12 to 24 seepage meter readings, gave a fair correlation (r;Seepage rates within ponds, as determined by seepage meter, exhibited a log-normal distribution. For the study ponds, seepage from water ;Seepage from two small (0.02, 0.05-ha) ponds was found to be correlated with pond bottom temperatures (r;Hydrologic budgets were used to estimate net water loss for various locations. A method was developed for predicting fishpond seepage rates based on the Unified Soil Classification System classification of the soil material and average water depth in the pond. Study results permit the construction of water budgets that more accurately reflect hydrologic conditions of fishponds.
