Occupational therapy for function in self-care following cerebrovascular accident: Is there increased function?

This thesis addresses the effectiveness of self-care as a treatment intervention in an acute care rehabilitation unit with a population of people who have sustained a cerebrovascular accident. Age, hemisphere of lesion, level of functional disability when admitted, level of cognitive disability when admitted, length of stay, number of complicating diagnoses, and hours of treatment and their affect on change in self-care function were also examined.;Research revealed that 93 percent of the subjects showed some measurable improvement in self-care function as evaluated by the Functional Independence Measure. Significant correlation was found between cognitive level when admitted and increase in self-care scores and between age and increase in self-care scores. No correlation was found between hours of treatment, length of stay, level of severity, number of complicating diagnoses, or hemisphere of lesion, and increase in self-care scores.
