Public perceptions/opinions of municipal water conservation plans

This research addresses the lack of information on citizen opinions that is available to communities attempting to develop and implement water conservation plans on a permanent basis. The research was conducted using a mail survey of water customers in 16 cities across Texas. The survey consisted of questions that asked the respondents to record their degree of disapproval or approval of various water conservation measures, as well as with alternative means by which to develop and enforce a water conservation plan. A second category of questions was used to obtain information about the respondents themselves. The analysis shows the impact of the environment in which the respondents live (external variable) and their personal characteristics (internal variables), on their opinions regarding water conservation. The recommendations made as to the water conservation strategies that are best suited in particular circumstances can be used to guide the actions of communities in similar circumstances.
