A study was conducted to investigate the kraft pulp and paper-making properties of wood chips degraded by a ligninase-producing fungus. Rye spawn of the white rot fungus Phanerochate chrysosporium was used to grow mycelia on glucose supplemented wood chips of red oak (Quercus rubra) and aspen (Populus tremuliodes). Samples were grown for 0, 10, 20 and 30 days. Changes in chemical composition of degraded and non-degraded wood were monitored, and kraft pulp yields and papermaking properties were evaluated.;As days (0, 10, 20, 30) of vegetative mycelial growth on wood chips increased, significant changes in weight loss, alkali solubility, ethanol-benzene extractive content and klason lignin content were observed. Glucose supplementation on wood chips minimized holocellulose degradation while providing a significant increase in weight loss and delignification at the 20- and 30-day incubation periods.;Pulp and handsheet evaluation showed that pulps prepared from P. chrysoporium degraded wood chips had higher pulp yields at any given kappa number, responded faster to beating more than non-degraded pulps, and had higher tensile, burst and fold properties than sheets from non-degraded pulps. Handsheets showed marked reductions in tear and brightness, but did not exhibit a reduction in sheet opacity.
