When performing reservoir engineering studies, petroleum engineers typically need values for permeability, porosity, and formation resistivity factor. These parameters are used to determine hydrocarbons in place, flow rates, and other information that is needed to accurately characterize a reservoir's past and future performance. Transient well testing, laboratory analyses, and well logging are the major techniques for determining these parameters. However, these techniques are expensive and all three techniques are usually not performed on every well in a formation. At present, no technique is available that allows an engineer to correlate all three parameters with either a single equation or a set of equations. The purpose of this research is to correlate and study the relationship between permeability, porosity, and formation resistivity factor.; A new technique for correlating permeability, porosity, and formation resistivity factor has been developed. The correlation technique utilizes three common equations and one new equation. The equations are solved iteratively as a set. Over one hundred data sets of permeability, porosity and formation resistivity factor, measured in either our own lab or industry labs were examined. The results of this research indicate that the correlation technique was successful in 28% of the cases analyzed.; Use of the correlation to determine the permeability of a formation in offset wells where core data is not available is described. Also, the results of the correlation technique may offer a measure of formation heterogeneity. In addition, a rationale for explaining the correlation results in terms of porous structure is proposed.
