Three different rheological models for viscoplastic lubricants have been compared and Reynolds equations developed. The Reynolds equations have been applied to analyze the wide slider bearing, the short slider bearing and the metalforming inlet zone.; The element analysis method, which reveals the local effect of asperities, has been developed and applied to generate an average flow model for rough surface lubrication with isoviscous lubricants. Simple analytical expressions for flow factors and shear stress factors have been derived, and have been applied in the analyses of a wide slider bearing and a metal forming inlet zone. The method has also been used to calculate the pressure distribution and load capacity for these cases when the number of asperities are finite.; The Reynolds equation and a semi-empirical plasticity equation have been coupled to solve for the film shape and pressure profile for different loading conditions in a metalforming work zone with rough tooling.; The combined effects of roughness and temperature difference between two surfaces have been investigated. The modified element analysis method has been used to derive a modified average Reynolds equation, modified flow factors and shear stress factors for thermoviscous lubricants. The results have been applied to modelling the lubrication of a plastically deforming metal strip drawn over a cylindrical pin.
