Research to gain a better understanding of the behaviour of a rock mass under mine induced stresses was carried out at the Golden Giant Mine, at Hemlo, Ontario.;A 16 channel whole waveform microseismic system was installed to monitor the behaviour of the rock mass surrounding a critical portion of the shaft.;Linear elastic numerical modelling of the study area was conducted using a direct 3D boundary element method. The analysis shows good correlation between location of microseismic event clusters and stress concentration zones. The foliation is the most probable set for shear slip. The calculated shear movement direction of the foliation planes at the event locations was compared to regional shear movements derived from previous tectono-stratigraphic studies and to in-situ stress orientations obtained from overcoring tests.;The analysis suggests that interactive studies using mapping, microseismics and modelling can be used to isolate critical fracture sets where shear movement may be induced and to derive key geomechanical constitutive parameters.
