Plans for establishing and developing the Social Research Studies and Information Center libraries in Saudi Arabia.

The problem was to define the present status of the Social Research Studies and Information Center libraries in Saudi Arabia and to suggest ways in which they could be improved.;The purposes of the study were two-fold: (1) to analyze and evaluate the current status of these libraries and to develop and improve the role and functions of these libraries; and (2) to consider the possibility of cooperation between these libraries.;The triangulation method consisting of questionnaires, interviews, and observations was used in the study. The study consisted of two questionnaires sent to twenty-five Social Research Studies and Information Center libraries in Saudi Arabia. The first questionnaire consisted of forty-four questions and was limited to fill-in responses. It was directed to the librarians. The second questionnaire consisted of thirty questions and was directed to employees of government agencies and information centers who use the libraries. Secondly, interviews with the librarians were held in which the library's administration, organization, and its strengths and weaknesses were discussed. Thirdly, observations of the twenty-five libraries were made. The intent of the questionnaires was to ascertain the present status of Social Research Studies and Information Center libraries in Saudi Arabia. The triangulation method is one of comparison so as to determine whether there is corroboration and to assess the sufficiency of the data with respect to the convergence of multiple data sources or multiple data collection procedures.;The methodology used for this study was a descriptive community survey which is applicable to all types of libraries and information centers.;The major limitations of the twenty-five Social Research Studies and Information Center libraries are: (1) inadequate funding, (2) non-uniformity in cataloging; (3) improperly designed buildings; (4) lack of suitable reading areas; (5) inadequate space for books and periodicals; and (6) inadequate space for staff.;On the basis of the questionnaires' findings, a plan for establishing, developing, and improving the role and functions of these libraries is explained.
