Aluminum and manganese in fresh natural waters were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The samples were taken from Lake Michigan, several lakes on Beaver Island, the Chippewa River and two ponds in the Mt. Pleasant area. No significant aluminum or manganese contamination was observed in any of these water samples.;The effect of pH on the determination of aluminum in atomic absorption spectrophotometry was examined using the "t" test at the 95 percent confidence level. No significant effect was seen in deionized water, standard aluminum solutions, or a river water sample.;The possibility of using calcium as a matrix modifier for the determination of aluminum in river water was studied. After calcium was added to the water sample, the slope of the standard addition aluminum linear regression line (absorbance vs. concentration) of a sample became very close to the slope of a standard aluminum solution line.
