The purpose of this research is to establish methods and a system for transforming finished (machined) part designs into shapes which are die castable. The major contribution from this work is a consistent and systematic method of analyzing the shape of die castings. This research is necessary because CAD/CAM/CAE systems are only loosely coupled with each other making manufacturability analysis very difficult to do. Part features which are critical to successful die casting are identified and the coupling between geometric information, geometric reasoning, and knowledge of the die casting process is clarified. A prototype system using solid modeling, object oriented programming and rule based systems has been constructed. Also, a technical review committee from industry was established to provide realistic test cases including both simple and complex parts for verification of the system. After careful evaluation, this prototype system has successfully verified the validity of the proposed concepts for die casting design.
