This thesis addresses the design of decentralized control laws for each controller which will enable the whole system to meet the design requirements of nominal stability, nominal performance, robust stability and robust performance. Particularly, new sequential design methodologies for nominal and robust control of decentralized systems are presented and implemented on various chemical processes.;In the first part, a set of new rules are developed to select control structures based on control system integrity considerations. They require only steady-state plant gain information and are scaling invariant.;In the second part, nominal decentralized stability conditions are presented using algebraic control and ;The last part of the thesis addresses the robustness of decentralized control systems. A general theory is presented which take into account robust stability or robust performance considerations for sequential design purposes. As a result, a systematic methodology for sequential design of robust decentralized controllers is proposed.
