Maintaining the competitiveness of small manufacturing firms in an environment of changing world markets and advanced technology implementations.

This dissertation looks at the difficulties facing small and medium-sized manufacturers in today's changing world. A brief review of the history of technology and market changes over the last 40 years and the impact of these changes on both large and small businesses in the U.S. is presented. While large businesses are beginning to address problems stemming from the changed conditions, the difficulties facing small and medium-sized firms are highlighted.;The difficulties of implementing effective technology transfer programs to reach small businesses and defining and funding programs in times of limited financial resources provided the impetus to search for new and different methods of helping small businesses.;A unique program to address the needs of small and medium-sized firms in these changing conditions is presented. The proposed program consists of a not-for-profit state-of-the-art production facility which would be shared by many small businesses and would provide access to modern manufacturing technology and methods which most small businesses are unable to acquire on their own. The problems of planning, organizing, financing, and implementing the program are addressed in detail. While the specific example presented is for a machining facility the general concept is applicable throughout many industries.;A significant number of large and small businesses and financial institutions have reviewed the program and indicated their belief that it is a step in the proper direction. Many of these have provided resources during the development of the program.
