The development of objective techniques for measuring air combat maneuvering (ACM) performance has been an elusive goal of past research efforts. The inclusion of valid and reliable objective measures for the highly ambiguous ACM task is considered an essential need for future US Air Force training. The current study was developed to investigate the validity of twenty ACM measures taken from three basic measurement classes. One-hundred and twenty-five qualified Air Force Fighter Pilots flew four air combat engagements each against a computer and against a single human adversary for a total of 1000 experimental engagements. A variety of statistical techniques uncovered an optimal performance model based on engagement outcomes. Discriminant function analyses were performed with the data sets for both the computer and human adversary, producing correct classification rates of 86.8% for the computer opponent and 85.6% for the human opponent. Further research should focus on the use of these models, together with additional variables, to produce diagnostic feedback that will enable the model to be an effective instructional aid.
