The indigenous palms of the state of Bahia, Brazil.

The indigenous palms (Arecaceae) of Bahia, Brazil were collected and studied from the author's own collections and herbarium material. This study has resulted in the confirmation of the presence or absence of species, in the lumping of some species, in the establishment of some new records, in the discovery of new species, varieties and hybrids, and the reviving of one formerly misunderstood species from synonymy. The present study of Bahian palms was started seven years ago while the author was living in Bahia, Brazil. As a result there are now 63 confirmed species (not including Geonoma species A), hybrids, and varieties in Bahia and include: 56 species, 6 hybrids and 1 variety. The following species have been placed in synonymy, Attalea concentrista Bondar has been placed under A. burretiana Bondar, A. acaulis Burret under A. funifera Mart. ex Spreng., A. borgesiana Bondar under A. humilis Mart. ex Spreng., and Bactris pectinata Mart. and B. integrifolia Wallace under B. hirta Mart. There are ten new records for the state: Allagoptera leucocalyx, Astrocaryum jauari, Attalea geraensis, Bactris caryotaefolia, B. ferruginea, B. pickelii, B. vulgaris, Butia capitata, Orbignya eichleri, and Syagrus picrophylla. Nine new species for the state are being described by several authors: Allagoptera brevicalyx M. Moraes, Attalea barreirensis Glassman, A. salvadorensis Glassman, A. seabrensis Glassman and Orbignya brejinhoensis Glassman, Bactris glassmanii Medeiros-Costa et Noblick, B. bahiensis Noblick, B. horridispatha Noblick, and B. soeiroana Noblick. There is also one new variety: Bactris ferruginea var. xanthacantha Noblick. There are two new hybrids: Attalea x voeksii Noblick (A. funifera with A. humilis) and Syagrus x mirandana Noblick (S. coronata with S. microphylla). Finally, Syagrus picrophylla Barb. Rodr. has been removed from the synonmy of S. oleracea (Mart.) Becc. and reestablished as a distinct species. Keys and figures have been supplied to facilitate identification. Background information on Bahia and the palm family and historical data on the collectors have also been discussed.
