The use of “visible” reinforced concrete, in structural and resistant members and in closing elements, is an alternative used by the designer against deterioration and ageing of buildings. However, this, material, which is made up of phonolitic or basalt aggregates and Portland cement with the addition of natural puzzolanas, has a natural grey tonality which invariably induces in the observer a feeling that the work is incomplete or unfinished. The idea of colouring the concrete came about as a result of this sensation: On one hand, it is clear that a building constructed in this stony and mouldable material will be solid and will require little maintenance, on the other hand if colour is added the feeling of dreariness conferred by the grey uniformity of the facings.; The colouring of concrete may be carried out in different ways: Experiments have been using coloured cements and sands and others by way of aggregates, mainly by naturally coloured limestone. The simplest method has been employed in order to carry out the present work, and involves the use of normal construction concrete which contain coloured pigments.; This Doctoral Thesis, fruit of more than five hundred kneaded different accomplished with concrete coloured in his bulk by the pigments addition and of the extracted experience from the pastes utilisation, mortars and concrete pigments in more than thirty built buildings, exposes the investigation accomplished in the Laboratory of the Architectural Construction Department, in the Architecture School of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in the one which have been approached the variations that the pigments addition present in the characteristic mechanical and chemistries of the concrete, as well as the configuration of colour letters, analysis of the relationship between moulded, textures and relief, facing, equally, the requirements of the superficial treatments.
