Effects of dynamic viewing on children's eyewitness identifications.

This developmental study examined the effects of various recognition formats on eyewitness recognition performance. A videotape of a staged bicycle theft by three male perpetrators was shown to 7-, 10-, and 18-year-olds. The participants were tested for their ability to recognize the perpetrators presented in videotaped multiple static views, static lineups and dynamic transformations in a "yes-no" recognition test four hours later. Analysis of the data revealed that, for all age groups, recognition accuracy was significantly better in the lineup condition than in the other recognition groups. There were no significant age differences found in recognition accuracy. This lack of significant age differences in recognition accuracy is in contrast to previously reported findings in face recognition research. The possible theoretical explanations for the results are explored.
