'An vollen Bueschelzweigen...': Goethes komplementaeres Denken und seine Resonanz in der naturwissenschaftlichen Forschung.

Based upon the comparison of two morphological writings, the "Metamorphose der Tiere" and the essay "Inwiefern die Idee: Schonheit sei Vollkommenheit mit Freiheit, auf organische Naturen angewendet werden konne", this thesis develops basic terms of Goethe's nature study and analyses their meaning for his reflexions on art. This leads towards the problems of the relation between 'idea' and 'appearance', 'Idee und Erscheinung'. In Goethe's way of thinking, the so-called 'gegenstandliches Denken', the dichotomy between subject and object is neutralized. The concluding chapter questions the importance of Goethe's complementary nature study as presented by modern scientists with special regard to the writings of Werner Heisenberg. This shows that Goethe's view of art is to be understood as a model of integration between the 'zwei Kulturen'.
