Arid landscape design strategies using ornamental plantings for effective insect and disease control.

The profession of landscape architecture requires expertise in the field of planting design and site evaluation. Contributing factors to sound design and siting practices include an understanding of the functional and aesthetic values of plants. Relevant to both of these concerns are disease and insect problems. This thesis summarizes the wealth of information and resources concerning pest management practices for ornamental plantings in an arid environment. The introduction relates an overview of the topic. The methods and results sections determine the five most important and prevalent diseases and insects affecting ornamental plantings in the Southwest. The discussion section deals with detailed descriptions of the five diseases and five insects, ornamentals affected by these pathogens and pests, common control practices and landscape design solutions which discourage disease or insect establishment. The conclusion emphasizes general design and planning strategies to either minimize or aid in control of pest and disease problems.
