Actin represents one of the most highly conserved families of proteins in evolution. The first chapter of this thesis dissertation deals with the molecular characterization of the smooth muscle (enteric) ;The second chapter of this dissertation deals with the characterization of a monoclonal antibody, designated 2B6, and represents an initial line of research. At the time this project was started, it was known that this antibody was specific for an antigen expressed only in skeletal muscle. However, it did not show reactivity with skeletal muscle preparations of actin, the immunogen used to elicit the immune response. Through a series of biochemical and cell biology experiments, it was determined that this antibody recognizes the M isoform of creatine kinase in the chicken.
