This paper deals with the implementation of a Brushless DC Motor (BLDCM) controller using Texas Instruments TMS320E14 Digital Signal Processor (DSP) chip. A model characterization of BLDCM is discussed briefly. A PD motion controller is employed instead of PID, since the "I" term merely eliminates the steady state error. A PI speed controller is used to perform constant speed rotation. Therefore, the controller complexity can be reduced. Using the data from a real motor, the control method under consideration is verified through computer simulation. The complete PD or PI controller has been implemented using a single-chip DSP, which results in the reduction of system hardware and cost. Algorithms are described, and experimental results are presented. The application of PD controller is Indexer. Some of the applications of PI controller are hard disk drive and industrial robot.
