We present strategies to solve the connection control problem in broadband networks. The control strategies that we focus on are categorized into two parts: connection control protocols and resource allocation algorithms. The objective is to set up end-to-end physical connections for data transfer, in Broadband Integrated Service Digital Network (BISDN) transport systems. In these systems, the connection may include more than two members, as for video conferencing, the requested bandwidth may differ for different traffic requirements and the terminal types of end stations may be incompatible, as for NTSC and HDTV. These requirements complicate the resource allocation algorithm and the connection establishment procedure. These connection control problems are tightly coupled and can be solved separately or combined into a single problem. In this dissertation, we first discuss the the connection control problem. A hierarchical abstraction of resource representation will be presented. In the connection control strategies, we propose three connection establishment procedures: a threading approach and a concurrent approach which are based on a centralized connection finding scheme, and a distributed approach, based on a distributed routing scheme. A detailed comparisons among these approaches is developed. In the second part of this dissertation, we discuss three different resource allocation strategies within the central office to perform the physical resource assignment. The analysis of these strategies in terms of the blocking probability, fairness and utilization is also developed. Some of these protocols and resource allocation algorithms within the central office have been implemented by a team, of which the author was a member, by using object oriented technique, as part of the project EXPerimental ATM Network and Services Environment (EXPANSE) (Buss 89) at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore).
