This dissertation research explores the feasibility of integrating a lake water-quality model with a geographic information system (GIS). The integrated system is applied to the eutrophication modeling of Lake Sidney Lanier in Georgia. It serves as a series of tool-kits for information integration, data management, simulation processing, result analysis and output display.; Lake Sidney Lanier is a reservoir located in northern Georgia. It is approximately 150 square kilometers in area and 3.15 billion cubic meters in capacity. It is the major water supply source for the Atlanta metropolitan area. The water uses and water quality problems have been an important concern to citizens and officials in recent years.; Several objectives were accomplished in this dissertation research: (1) A geographic database was developed to support the modeling of the Lake Sidney Lanier ecosystem, in particular the eutrophication processes affecting water quality; (2) An interface program was designed to integrate the water quality model (WASP4/EUTRO4) with a geographic information system (ARC/INFO); (3) The integrated system was applied to the eutrophication modeling of Lake Sidney Lanier which provided information for the analysis of lake water quality and the evaluation of management alternatives for water quality control and water uses.
