Automated air defense planning using digitized terrain from CD-ROM media.

Air defense planning is a special case of an assignment type problem. Planning the location, quantity and sequence of air defense weapon systems has been a labor intensive process and subjective. This report describes a computerized planning assistance system that was developed and the techniques used. The system uses digitized terrain from DOD's Defense Mapping Agency in CD-ROM Digitized terrain elevation data (DTED-1) format. The system combines this digitized terrain with information in databases on critical assets to be defended, friendly and enemy data. The system recommends location, type of air defense weapons systems and arrival sequence. The system also allows the decision maker to visualize the terrain in 3D and to see the radar clutter and coverage diagram. This system implements the weighted sum model decision methodology in a heuristic approach to site selection. This system executes on a PC using Microsoft Windows 3.1 (TM).
